Law Enforcement & Support Staff

For police officers, a sleep test is rarely a day-one requirement but is almost always triggered by Fitness for Duty (FFD) evaluations. Because officers carry firearms and make split-second "deadly force" decisions, departments are increasingly proactive about screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

The "Vigilance" Requirement

Officers must maintain high levels of cognitive function for patrols and high-stress encounters. Undiagnosed sleep disorders are linked to a 1.4x higher risk of serious administrative errors and safety violations.

Mandatory Triggers

A sleep test is typically mandated if an officer:

  • Is involved in an on-duty vehicle accident where fatigue is suspected.
  • Displays "uncontrolled anger" or erratic behavior (often a symptom of chronic sleep deprivation).
  • Meets physical markers during a periodic physical (e.g., BMI > 35 or a large neck circumference).

SWAT & Specialized Units

Many departments require more rigorous screening for tactical units, where peak physical and mental readiness is a non-negotiable prerequisite for the role.
